NORFOLK, Va. – One-month-old baby Honesty continues to fight for her life days after she was shot and left with severe injuries.
Honesty’s mom Jakireya Brehon is asking for prayers.
“Just praying day by day,” she said.
Jakireya Brehon took a photo of her baby (pictured above) the day she turned one month old on August 25. Just a few hours later, the horrific incident unfolded.
The family said they were in the courtyard at Lexington Park Apartments in Norfolk Tuesday night when a barrage of bullets struck the infant, her mother and three other adults.
Honesty’s grandma Arkeda Brehon was there.
“I was on my front porch and I heard gunfire like bang, bang, bang, bang, bang,” said Arkeda Brehon. “My daughter was saying, ‘Mom, me and my baby, we hit, we hit.’”
Jakireya Brehon was shot in the leg. Police said the other adults are expected to be okay.
Honesty suffered extensive damage to her reproductive system, part of her intestine and both thigh bones. She remains in critical but stable condition at CHKD.
“I’m just taking everything day by day, trying to process everything,” Jakireya Brehon said.
Honesty’s cousin Jazmin Sherard said the infant just underwent her second surgery.
“It’s just going to be a long journey for her,” she said.
Honesty, who has a one-year-old sister named Loyalty, has been a fighter since the minute she was born. The month-old baby was born premature and spent weeks in the hospital.
Sherard said Honesty was only home for a couple of weeks before gunfire filled her neighborhood.
“This is unacceptable,” she said. “The increase in gun violence in this area is absolutely disturbing and disgusting, especially amongst children.”
Police Chief Larry Boone said Honesty is one of the youngest victims to be impacted by gun violence in the city. He voiced his concerns on social media Wednesday speaking out against the violence.
Community activist Stacey Robinson, who also is the founder of K.I.N.D. (Kings in Need of Development), echoed Boone’s sentiments. He said the rallying cry for change seen around the world in the BLM movement, needs to address gun violence within the Black community.
“We come out for Black Lives Matter when we have police shootings, but we’re not coming out when our children are being affected in our community,” Robinson said.
Meanwhile, Honesty’s devastated family is pleading for justice and information that will lead to an arrest of the suspect who committed the senseless act.
“If you know something please speak up,” said Sherard. “I know it’s scary; I know it’s hard. I know you’re afraid, but at this point we’re talking about a baby who hasn’t even been here for 30 days.”
According to police, there are no suspects in custody.
Chief Boone told News 3 they have an idea of who the suspect is, but they need more conclusive information before they move forward with the investigation.
